HSE MANAGER IN AN UNDERGROUND GOLD MINE (Health, Safety, Environment)

Place of workUnderground  gold mine with frequent travel to sites in East Africa.

Main responsibilities

  • The HSE Manager is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of HSE policies within the mine. Duties include:
  • Developing and implementing HSE policies: Defining and updating health, safety and environmental policies in accordance with current regulations.
  • Risk Management: Identifying, assessing and prioritising risks associated with mining activities and implementing appropriate preventive and corrective measures.
  • Audits and inspections: Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with HSE standards and suggest improvements.
  • Training and awareness: Designing and delivering training courses to raise employee awareness of safety and environmental practices.
  • Reporting: Preparing weekly and monthly reports on HSE performance, including key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Team coordination: Leading a team of HSE Officers on site and coordinating activities with other departments.

Profile sought

Education: Degree in Risk Management, HSE Engineering or related field (5 years post graduate education recommended).
Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a similar position, ideally in the mining sector, with significant experience in an underground environment, particularly in East Africa.
Languages: Fluent in English as primary language; knowledge of other local languages an advantage.

Technical skills:

Knowledge of ISO standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
In-depth knowledge of HSE regulations applicable to the mining sector.
Ability to analyse data and conduct internal audits.
Interpersonal skills:
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work in a team and lead working groups.

Working Conditions

Field based position with regular travel to various mines.
Physical requirements appropriate to underground working conditions
