Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Operations, he is responsible for managing the technical services group and providing technical guidance to the mining engineering, geotechnical, hydrology, surveying and mine planning departments for operations.
Coordination of Mining Operations and Optimization of Communication
- To interface with mining geology, operations, the mining contractor and the processing plant by providing guidance and plans for the timely achievement of company objectives and key performance indicators.
- Undertake mining studies and projects such as resource and reserve work, and profitability studies to determine efficient processes that reduce costs or increase mine profitability and efficiency.
- Explore the use of other new technologies to improve profitability.
- Review and implement standards and procedures that improve work efficiency, profitability and the technical skills of existing staff.
Leadership
- Provide strong leadership to the technical services teams and mine planning departments.
- Ensure that the company’s core values are respected and lead by example.
- Safety, health and environmental protection (SHEC)
- Ensure that all employees are aware of their responsibilities regarding safety, health and the environment and comply with company policies and procedures.
- Develop a risk management approach for team activities and ensure that high-risk controls are audited.
- Supporting the creation of a workplace culture in which people are committed to working safely.
- Ensure that all SHEC actions are completed on time and according to the required standards.
- To liaise with senior management at headquarters and mines and to carry out projects that will help solve operational problems and increase operational efficiency.
Compliance and quality
- Achieve the agreed KPIs for the technical services department and the site.
- Collaborating with the management team in developing site policies.
- Ensure that all data collection practices are supported by systems, quality controls and training.
- Ensure that the declaration of reserves complies with the LSE/AIM and JORC 2012 declaration standards.
- Ensure that the plant feed meets the quality requirements set by the processing team. Conduct reconciliation audits of mine and plant production, identifying trends and practices that prevent maximum resource extraction from the deposits.
- Ensure that current systems are documented and allow for consistent quality production.
- Ensure that data collection is carried out in a timely manner, that production accounting is accurate, and that reports are published on time.
Reporting
- Ensure that all department reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly) are prepared on time and to high standards.
- Ensure that sufficient resources are available to carry out annual updates of JORC reserves and provide a signature as CP in accordance with JORC standards.
- Track and report each month any physical and financial discrepancies compared to the budget.
- Mine lifespan
- Ensure that the mine life plan is fully optimized by providing sufficient human and financial resources.
- Manage feasibility studies for extending the mine’s lifespan.
Human Resources Management
- Support the personal development plans of team members by ensuring that all team members are appropriately trained and assessed so that they can safely perform all aspects of their job.
- Recruiting and retaining quality people with the appropriate skills.
- Managing people’s expectations so that they align with company objectives
Profile
Knowledge / Skills and Competencies
- Computer skills – Advanced MS Office
- Experience in planning, mine design, modeling and structuring of mineral reserves.
- Understanding and experience of working in a narrow-vein gold mining environment.
- Understanding of content reconciliation practices.
- Understanding of reporting requirements according to LSX/AIM, JORC and NI43-101 protocols.
- Mining production practices and grade control.
- Ability to lead, develop and mentor a large group of technical employees.
- Practices/principles of metallurgy.
- Techniques d’analyse (AQ/CQ).
- Skills in writing and presenting technical reports.
- Skills in mine planning and design software are desirable.
- Budget preparation and cost management.
Training / Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (4/5 years of higher education) in mining engineering.
- Membership in a recognized international mining professional organization, such as AusIMM, SAIMM or PEng.
- Certification as a CP under the JORC or QP under NI43-101 reports.
Experience required
- 15 years of experience in open-pit mining engineering, with a thorough understanding of mine planning, geohydrology and geotechnical issues related to open-pit mining, as well as some knowledge or experience of underground mining.
- 10 years in a superintendent or supervisory role, with supervisory experience managing a diverse group of mining professionals
